Derick's practice focuses primarily on the protection and commercial exploitation of intellectual property rights, and specifically those pertaining to computing technology (hardware, software, web applications, telecommunications law). He also engages in commercial work generally, and assists clients in managing legal compliance programmes.
Academically, Derick studied at the Stellenbosch University, completing the degrees BA (Law) and LLB in 1997. Derick qualified as a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP™) in 2002. During 2006 he received the degree BPhil (Bible Interpretation) from the Faculty of Theology at Stellenbosch University.
In 1998 he worked as a Junior Lecturer in the Department of Private Law at the Faculty of Law at Stellenbosch University, whereafter he commenced his articles with the firm in 1999 and was appointed as professional assistant in 2001. He was subsequently invited to become a partner of the firm - a highlight in his career with the firm.
Derick has co-authored an article entitled “Electronic Money In South African Law”, with Prof Max Loubser, which was published in an academic journal and authored the chapter on online payment systems in South Africa's first book on Internet law, entitled Cyberlaw at SA. He is a regular speaker at conferences and seminars.
Derick is married to a lovely (and patient) wife, Greta, and is priviledged to be the father of a son and daughter, Christiaan and Anje.
Derick enjoys (yes) technology, but also motorcycles, mountain biking, music and photography. Moreover, Derick enjoys developing web applications - including this one!
