He attended school in Wellington and was first on the merit list in the Cape in the Senior Certificate examination in 1966.

After military service he studied at Stellenbosch University and obtained both the BA and LLB degrees cum laude. He was awarded a South Africa-at-large Rhodes Scholarship for study at the University of Oxford, where he obtained his doctorate in law in 1977.

He was admitted as an attorney in 1981 and became a director of Cluver Markotter in 1982.

He is professor of law at the University of Stellenbosch; and combines an academic career with legal practice at Cluver Markotter as attorney, notary and conveyancer.
The focus of his practice is general commercial law.

His involvement in community activities have included the following at various times:
Member and chairman of the governing body of the Stellenbosch Primary School; member and chairman of the governing body of Paul Roos Gimnasium; member of the central selection committee for the Rhodes Scholarships in South Africa; trustee of the Spier Festival Trust; trustee of the Stellenbosch Primary School Trust; trustee of the Paul Roos Gymnasium Trust; trustee of the Matie Community Services Trust; commissioner of the Small Claims Court.
He is a director of a number of companies in the Spectra-Medic group of companies, Stellenbosch.

His publications include books on prescription, third party compensation in motor vehicle accident cases; sport and the law in South Africa; and numerous articles in legal journals.
His sporting activities are cycling (regular participant in Argus-Pick-‘n-Pay Cycle Tour), jogging, and occasional golf.

Hobbies include reading, bird watching and bird photography.
He is married to Christine and they have a daughter and two sons.
